GETTING AROUND BUFFALO

TRANSPORTATION

Getting to Buffalo—and getting around Buffalo—is easy. But you might find it hard to ever want to leave!

GETTING HERE

By car:  The New York State Thruway (I-90) runs directly through the Buffalo metro area. From Canada, take the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW).

By rail: Travel Amtrak direct from Chicago, Toronto, Albany and New York City. There are three stations in the Buffalo Niagara region, including the Exchange Street station (BFX) downtown.

By air: The Buffalo Niagara International Airport is located just fifteen minutes east of downtown Buffalo. Major carriers are US Airways, Continental, American, Northwest, United, jetBlue, Southwest and Delta.

GETTING AROUND

Getting around Buffalo and its suburbs is easy and convenient using the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (NFTA) Metro Bus and Rail system. The Metro Rail runs along Main Street from the First Niagara Center to the South Campus of the University at Buffalo, with several stops in between. The train is free while traveling above ground. However, if your ride takes you past the Theatre District, down into the subway, there is a small charge. Be sure to purchase your ticket before entering the underground portion.

Bus stops are found on almost every street corner downtown, as well as at many other spots throughout the region. Bus schedules are available at all transportation centers, the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center, the Downtown Visitor Center and many local banks

If you prefer to drive, this map will help. And you’ll find plenty of parking throughout the city to house your car while you’re exploring.

BIRD ISLAND WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT (1 Hour) TOUR

April 11, 2018, 4:30 PM – 5:30 PM

Prior to the Networking Event the Buffalo Sewer Authority and APWA NY ask that you please join us for a tour of the Buffalo Sewer Authority’s Bird Island Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP).  The Bird Island WWTP was originally constructed in 1938 as a primary treatment facility to address the deteriorating water quality and presence of bacterial pollution in the Niagara River and surrounding water bodies, which also posed significant health problems.  A system of intercepting sewers was used to bring wastewater to the then modern primary treatment plant. Later, in response to the Clean Water Act of 1972, the Bird Island facility was expanded to include secondary treatment in the late 1970s.  Since that time, numerous improvements have been made to the collection system and treatment plant to advance treatment performance and efficiency.

Today, the Bird Island WWTP currently serves over 550,000 people from the City of Buffalo, as well as all or part of nine tributary communities.

EDUCATION

EDUCATION PROGRAM

Come back to this webpage often! We’ll be adding more information about the schedule, presentations, speakers, and idea exchanges as each becomes available.

APWA's goal for the Annual Conferences Education Program is to create an event where you're able to make meaningful connections and discover and produce game-changing insights and solutions.

APWA knows the challenges and opportunities facing public works are unprecedented. The speed of social and technological change places an enormous responsibility on you to proactively provide and maintain the infrastructure needed for your community’s growth and well-being.

We want to share experiences that will help you gain new perspectives, exchange ideas and participate in important and thought-provoking discussions on the shape of things to come.

We need you to arrive in Buffalo prepared to ask the essential questions and share your views and ideas. Start thinking now about:

What challenge are you facing that a solution seems out-of-reach?

What leadership qualities, skills, and resources are needed to lead and manage the modern public works department?

What innovations and solutions has your agency implemented that would help the whole profession provide better public works services?

What are your blind spots? Are you open to fresh and broader perspectives?

What is your vision for the future of public works?

Can innovation be learned?

What’s coming? Do you have any hunches or visions for what the next technological advancement will be?

How should we be providing public works infrastructure and services that are resilient and sustainable?

Don’t stop there – what else is on your mind? We’re counting on you to show up eager to ask smart questions and to join your colleagues in imagining the future your communities deserve!

The APWA NY Chapter is committed to helping you learn from each other.  The 2018 Annual Conference will include opportunities for you to do just that.

We’ll still cover the basic public works interest areas including: leadership, professional development, emergency planning and response, streets/roads construction and maintenance, traffic engineering and active transportation solutions, engineering and technology, water/wastewater, stormwater, fleet services, solid waste management, facilities construction and maintenance, grounds maintenance and urban forestry, sustainability and resiliency, and utility and right-of-way management.

The vision for the APWA NY Annual Conference is to evolve and improve with each succeeding year. In 2018, we want to hear feedback and recommendations from you as to how to make this conference a rewarding as well as even bigger and better.
